MEET OUR CHEF
Chef Mike Magee was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was constantly drawn to the tastes and smells of the familiar creole-style cooking that surrounded him growing up. He started in the kitchen at a young age, following his grandmother around ‘always at the hem of her apron.’ When Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005, he saw the need for cooks in the city and decided that cooking would be the way he would give back and represent his city.
In 2006, Chef Mike graduated from the Culinary Institute of New Orleans. From there, he landed spots at Muriel’s Jackson Square, La Foret, and most notably- August. While working with top-notch chefs like Scott Boswell, Guy Sockrider, and John Besh, he perfected his techniques and fine-tuned his culinary style while getting the experience he needed to make it in the restaurant world. He made sure he had well-rounded cooking experiences by participating in stages at Primo (in Maine), L20 (in Chicago), and Quince (in California.)
It was in 2012 that Chef Mike decided to come settle down in Madison, Wisconsin and took the Executive Chef job at The Wise Restaurant & Bar. He took his inspiration from his upbringing in New Orleans to create Spanish/Creole-inspired dishes for the restaurant. The New Orleans Brunch, served on the weekends, is a hit with local food lovers who enjoy NOLA brunch classics with unexpected twists. His signature dishes include fresh pastas like Creole Cream Cheese Dumplings and Farmer’s Market Ravioli.
